Questions & Answers
Are Royal and Linax same thing?
Our Norwegian colleagues use the name Royal. In Sweden, Royal is a registered trademark of a different product. Yes! We use the same type of equipment, we run the same kind of processes, and we buy the same kind of acting agents and processing oils from the same supplier.
Does it mean that Linax is impregnated only with linseed oil?
No! First, the wood is impregnated with a copper agent with the addition of fungicides. The wood is then run through the Linax process. This means that water is boiled off the wood to a moisture content of about 16-18%. It is then impregnated with a linseed oil mixture, consisting of about 50% linseed oil and the remainder a mixture of other mineral oils. Linax products offer good protection against rot and cracks, which in turn means it has an extended length of life.
Which screws and nails should I use?
Select high-quality decking screws designed for impregnated wood. If using nails, acid-proof ones are recommended.
Which colours are available?
Red, brown, yellow ochre or natural. Natural is a non-pigmented treatment, which turns grey over time.
Can I paint wood impregnated with Linax?
Yes. Don’t forget to mention to your local paint-dealer that the wood was previously impregnated with linseed oil, to ensure you choose the right paint.
Is Linax maintenance free?
No! Wood needs to be maintained sooner or later. For Linax products this happens "later". Surfaces exposed to harsh weather conditions should be maintained approximately every 5-7 years. Surfaces that are in protected areas can manage up to 20 years before its time for maintenance.
How do I carry out the maintenance?
Ensure that the wood is dry before beginning the maintenance. The moisture content should be below 20%. Surface treating at the wrong time of the year or in poor weather could mean a greater risk of a poor result.
Clean the surface thoroughly of dirt and dust and scrape off any flakes and resin that may have penetrated the surface. For the first maintenance treatment it is normally sufficient to apply a single coat of Bitus Carex Natural Linseed oil for outdoor-use, even for pigmented surfaces. The oil refurbishes the pigment, which regains its original colour. If the colour needs improvement, use Bitus Carex Brown, Yellow or Red linseed oil glazes. The oils are available through us or our dealers.
Does Linax-impregnated wood offer a rot protection guarantee?
Yes!
Linax impregnation qualifies for Class AB, which guarantees 20-years rot protection when used above ground, regardless of the maintenance performed.
Does Linax mean two treatments?
Yes.
First, an AB-impregnation is done to ensure excellent protection against mould and thereafter a linseed oil treatment, with or without pigments.
